The Children's Nest's staff is listed herein. Each room has a lead teacher, as well as at least one assistant. The part time staff 'float' from room to room as needed. The lead teacher in each room is required to have either a college degree or at least 24 hours of Lead Teacher Training. Each staff member is required to undergo at least 16 training hours per year. These hours can be completed by reading a professional book and taking a test, writing and implementing literacy based lesson plans, or taking classes.


Gülbün Esen - Owner and Director

Gülbün Esen, Owner and Director of the Children's Nest Preschool and Daycare has over 25 years of experience as a child care professional. In 1995, Gülbün opened the Children's Nest to serve the needs of children and families in the Blacksburg area. Prior to opening the Children's Nest, she was a Director for 10 years at another day care facility. Gülbün has created a nurturing environment for children to learn, develop and thrive. Gülbün has two daughters, Evren and Filiz, and two grandchildren, Devrim and Leyla.

Christina Ramsey - Assistant and Program Director

My name is Christina. I am the assistant director/program director. I have been in this position since July 2014. While I was attending Virginia Tech, I began working at the Nest. I earned my Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, and I decided to continue my education at Radford. After earning my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, I moved to Charlottesville and worked at a Child Development Center for a few months. I returned to Blacksburg in January 2013 and began working for Head Start until I was offered this wonderful position at the Nest. My husband and I married in October 2013 in Blacksburg, where we currently reside. We are currently waiting the arrival of our first child in May 2015! I love children, and I always knew I wanted to work with them, so I am very excited about this career opportunity at the Nest!

Infant Room Teachers

Kathy Haas, Baby Room

Hi, my name is Kathy. I’m the lead teacher in the baby room and have worked at the Nest since 1998. I grew up in Upstate N.Y. and moved to Blacksburg in 1991. I married my husband in 1975. We have 3 married children and 8 grandchildren. I have always loved babies and our goal here is to make all our babies feel secure and loved.

Ashley Munger, Baby Room

Hi! My name is Ashley, and I’ve been working at the Children’s Nest for almost two years in the baby room. I got married in June, and I am from Mississippi. I am the oldest of 5 children with my youngest sibling being 9 years old. Working with children has always been something I have wanted to do. I feel blessed to be able to work with them every day.

Rhonda Simpkins, Baby Room

My name is Rhonda. I have worked at the Children’s Nest for seven years. I have been in childcare for 27 years. I love working with babies and watching them grow and learn new things. I have two children of my own and a 2-year-old grandson. Children bring joy into my life.

Toddler Room Teachers

Sondra Gean, Toddler Room

Hi, my name is Sondra. I have been the lead teacher in the toddler room for twenty years. I was born in Hayward, California, but I have spent most of my life in Blacksburg. My husband, Tom, and I have been married for seventeen years and have three boys. My youngest is currently in our schooler program here at the Children’s Nest. After twenty years, I still absolutely love my job!

Judy Alls, Toddler Room

My name is Judy. I have worked in daycare for 37 years. I work with the toddlers, and I enjoy being with them very much. I am married to Willis and have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren ages 15, 14, 13, and 9 years old. In my spare time, I enjoy working in my flower garden, traveling, and spending time with my family. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your children.

Haby Konate, Toddler Room

I have a MD degree and Master degree in Health Promotion. I am certified in Medication Administration, First Aid, and CPR. I have worked in several daycare centers prior to working at Children’s Nest, where I have been working since August 2011. I enjoy working with children.

Mahfuza Yeasmin, Toddler Room

My name is Mahfuza. I have been working in the toddler room for ten years. I love all my toddler friends. I really enjoy working with them.

Two-Year Olds' Teachers

Jennifer Stonefield, Two-Year Old Room

Hello, my name is Jennifer. I am the lead teacher in the Two-Year Old Room. I have been in childcare for 15+ years. I enjoy working with children because no two days are the same. The twos make everyday interesting and fun. And, let’s face it, no better job perks than hugs and fun all day. I feel blessed to have a job that I absolutely love and cannot imagine doing anything else. I live in Christiansburg with my husband Robert, who is a meteorologist for the NWS, and our two cats, Samantha and Angelina.

Elizabeth Mullis, Two-Year Old Room

Hi, my name is Elizabeth; however, I am known as Ms. Libby here at the Nest. I originally moved to Blacksburg from Wise County, VA with my daughter Amanda Tiffany who came up here to go to VCOM medical school. She is now a graduate doing her residency at Carilion Hospital in Roanoke. I also have a son, Maxwell, who is married to a lovely girl, Sarah, and are parents to my first granddaughter, Aurora Sophia. I have been at the Nest for over 2 years. I began in the PreK room but soon moved to the 2-year-old room, and I’m loving every minute of it. This age group is my favorite because they are so unpredictable, amazing, and they bring something different every day. I love to help them learn new things. Prior to working here, I worked at Noah’s Ark Preschool. When I am not taking care of all my little ones at work, I can’t wait to get back home to play with and love on my 4-legged fur baby, Miss Daisy. We spend our free time together either walking around the neighborhood or lounging at home.

Three-Year Olds' Teachers

Amy Stutzman, Three-Year Old Room

My name is Amy. I am the lead teacher in the Three-Year Old Room. I’ve been employed here at Children’s Nest for 10 years. I’m the lead teacher in the Three’s, and I help out in the office as well. I have family in Pittsburgh and in California. I’m a huge Ohio State fan – OH-IO! I also enjoy watching the Dallas Cowboys, Boston Bruins, and Barclay’s Premiere League (Go Gunners!). In my spare time, I enjoy running and doing Insanity Asylum workouts.

Jennie Vivian, Three-Year Old Room

My name is Jennie. I have worked with children for a number of years. I find them challenging and rewarding. It is wonderful to see how each one blossoms as they mature.

Four-Year Olds' Teachers

Shelly White, PreK Room

My name is Shelly. I am the lead teacher in the PreK Room. I have worked in childcare since I was 15 years old. I have worked with all age groups. I am currently the Pre-K teacher here at the Children’s Nest. I also help with the Schooler’s during the summer program and drive the vans during the school year. My husband and I have 2 children, Brad who is 15 and Katlyn who is 8, and a dog named Bear. We are originally from a small town named Colonial Beach, VA. We moved to Blacksburg in 2008.

Katherine Johnson, PreK Room

My name is Katherine. I am currently the assistant teacher in the PreK room at The Children’s Nest. I have also worked at other daycare sand preschools including Rainbow Riders and Noah’s Ark Preschool. I have also worked with and taught children outside of the daycare setting, including teaching Elementary Sunday School for seven years and running summer camps for elementary and middle school ages for the past two years. I am trained to work with ages ranging from newborn to middle school. I absolutely love my job and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for our class!

Schooler Teacher

Darian Vick, Schooler Room/Floater

My name is Darian. I’m a wife and mother of 6 children. I have worked and cared for children for over 10 years. I volunteer once a year at the Boys and Girls club in New York City. I love helping children, showing them how to do things, and help them grow into great little people. My passion is working with kids. I love to travel, learn about different cultures, and eat different foods.

Martha Smith, Cook

My name is Martha. I was raised in Blacksburg. I enjoy cooking. I have been in food service for over 20 years. I really enjoy cooking for all the children at the Children’s Nest!
